Many people ask: “Why did Allah create Shaytan if he causes evil?” The answer lies in Allah’s infinite wisdom and the purpose of free will. Let’s explore the deeper reasons behind Shaytan’s creation.
Who is Shaytan?
There is no explicit verse in the Quran or authentic hadith that directly states why Shaytan (Iblis) was in heaven. However, in the Quran, Allah includes Iblis (a jinn) when commanding the angels to prostrate to Adam (AS). This indicates that Iblis held an elevated status, beyond that of ordinary jinn. However, his arrogance later caused his downfall. Shaytan (Satan) is a rebellious jinn who at the time was in heaven and refused Allah’s command to bow to Prophet Adam (AS). Cursed for his arrogance, he vowed to mislead humanity until Judgment Day. In Islam, Shaytan is not a fallen angel but a cunning enemy who whispers evil (waswasa) and tests believers’ faith. His ultimate goal is to lead people away from Allah’s path through deception and temptation. Understanding his nature helps Muslims guard against his tricks and strengthen their devotion.
When your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to create a human being from clay.
So when I have fashioned him and had a spirit of My Own breathed into him, fall down in prostration to him.”
So the angels prostrated all together
but not Iblîs, who acted arrogantly, becoming unfaithful.
Allah asked, “O Iblîs! What prevented you from prostrating to what I created with My Own Hands? Did you become proud? Or have you always been arrogant?”
He replied, “I am better than he is: You created me from fire and him from clay.”
Allah commanded, “Then get out of Paradise, for you are truly cursed.
And surely upon you is My condemnation until the Day of Judgment.”
Quran 38:71-78
Why was he created?
1. To Test Human Faith & Obedience
Allah created Shaytan as a test for humanity. Just as gold is purified by fire, humans are tested through trials. Shaytan tempts us, but resisting him strengthens faith.
2. To Establish True Free Will
Without choice, worship has no meaning. Allah gave humans and jinn free will, Shaytan chose disobedience, while we must choose righteousness. This makes our devotion meaningful.
3. To Highlight Justice & Mercy
Shaytan’s rebellion shows Allah’s justice, he was punished for arrogance. Yet, Allah’s mercy allows us repentance. This balance demonstrates divine wisdom.
4. To Expose Hidden Weaknesses
Shaytan reveals hidden flaws, pushing believers to self-improvement. Struggling against his whispers builds patience, resilience, and reliance on Allah.
5. To Fulfill a Greater Divine Plan
Everything in creation has purpose. Even Shaytan’s role, though negative, serves Allah’s ultimate wisdom, guiding believers toward higher spiritual ranks.
Key Lessons from Shaytan’s Existence
- Trials purify and elevate believers
- True faith requires resisting evil
