In Islam, who are Ishmael (Ismail) and Isaac (Ishaq)? We explore their roles, their key contributions, and the lessons Muslims derive from their lives. Ishmael and Isaac were two brothers, sons of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS).

The Story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and His Sons

Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) is revered in Islam for his unwavering faith. Allah tested him with numerous trials, including the command to sacrifice his son Ishmael (AS).

My Lord! Bless me with righteous offspring.”

So We gave him good news of a forbearing son.

Then when the boy reached the age to work with him, Abraham said, “O my dear son! I have seen in a dream that I sacrifice you. So tell me what you think.” He replied, “O my dear father! Do as you are commanded. Allah willing, you will find me steadfast.”

Then when they submitted, and Abraham laid him on the side of his forehead.

We called out to him, “O Abraham!

You have already fulfilled the vision.” Indeed, this is how We reward the good-doers.

That was truly a revealing test.

And We ransomed his son with a great sacrifice,

Quran 37:100 – 107

Ishmael in Islam: The Father of a Great Nation

Key Contributions of Ishmael:

Helped Build the Kaaba – Alongside his father, Ishmael rebuilt the Kaaba in Mecca, which became the holiest site in Islam.

And when Abraham raised the foundation of the House with Ishmael, both praying, “Our Lord! Accept ˹this˺ from us. You are indeed the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

Quran 2:127

Accepted the Ultimate Test – When Allah commanded Ibrahim to sacrifice him, Ishmael willingly submitted, saying:

Then when the boy reached the age to work with him, Abraham said, “O my dear son! I have seen in a dream that I sacrifice you. So tell me what you think.” He replied, “O my dear father! Do as you are commanded. Allah willing, you will find me steadfast.”

Quran 37:102

Allah replaced him with a ram, marking the event commemorated during Eid al-Adha. His descendants include the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), making him a pivotal figure in Islamic history.

Isaac in Islam: A Prophet with a Blessed Lineage

Key Contributions of Isaac:

Continued Prophethood – Isaac was a righteous prophet, and Allah blessed his lineage with many messengers, including Jacob (Yaqub) and Joseph (Yusuf).

We later gave him good news of Isaac—a prophet, and one of the righteous.

We blessed him and Isaac as well. Some of their descendants did good, while others clearly wronged themselves.

Quran 37:112-113

Father of the Israelites – While Ishmael’s descendants became the Arabs, Isaac’s line led to the Israelite prophets, maintaining divine guidance.

The Ultimate Test: The Command to Sacrifice

One of Ibrahim’s greatest trials was Allah’s command to sacrifice his son. Both father and son demonstrated unmatched faith. At the last moment, Allah replaced the boy with a ram, rewarding their obedience. This event is central to Eid al-Adha, teaching Muslims the value of submission to Allah’s will.

Key Lessons from Ishmael and Isaac’s Story

  1. Unshakable Faith – Ibrahim, Ishmael, and Isaac showed complete trust in Allah
  2. Divine Mercy – Allah’s intervention highlights His compassion
  3. Patience in Trials – Hajar’s struggle and Ishmael’s acceptance teach perseverance
  4. Legacy of Prophethood – Both sons carried forward Allah’s message through their descendants

Conclusion

The story of Ishmael and Isaac in Islam underscores faith, sacrifice, and divine wisdom. While their narratives differ slightly from Judeo-Christian traditions, their lessons remain universal. By studying their lives, Muslims strengthen their connection to Allah and the legacy of His prophets.
