The Importance of Salah in Islam

Salah is one of the five pillars of Islam and the very first act of worship we will be held accountable for. It was made obligatory directly to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during the Night Journey and is required of every sane, adult Muslim.

This act of worship must be upheld in all conditions—whether you are healthy or sick, traveling or at home, and whether you can stand, sit, or only lie down. Knowing how to pray Salah in every circumstance is therefore essential.

Salah strengthens your faith, brings peace to the heart, and serves as a shield against sin, encouraging a mindful, God-conscious life. Allah says in the Quran:

Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, ˹genuine˺ prayer should deter ˹one˺ from indecency and wickedness. The remembrance of Allah is ˹an˺ even greater ˹deterrent˺. And Allah ˹fully˺ knows what you ˹all˺ do.

(Quran 29:45)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also stressed its importance, saying:
“Pray as you have seen me praying.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari: Book 10, Hadith 28)

It was narrated from Tamim Dari that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The first thing for which a person will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection will be his prayer. If it is complete, then the voluntary (prayers) will also be recorded for him (as an increase). If it is not complete then Allah will say to His angels: ‘Look and see whether you find any voluntary prayers for My slave, and take them to make up what is lacking from his obligatory prayers.’ Then all his deeds will be reckoned in like manner.”

(Sunan Ibn Majah: Book 5, Hadith 624)

This makes it clear that perfecting how to pray Salah must be a top priority. It is your most direct, personal connection with Allah, and the Quran praises those who are consistent and humble in it, promising them success and Paradise.

Successful indeed are the believers: those who humble themselves in prayer;

Successful indeed are the believers:
those who humble themselves in prayer;

(Quran 23:1-2)

Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, “If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in
it five times a day would you notice any dirt on him?” They said, “Not a trace of dirt would be left.”
The Prophet (ﷺ) added, “That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah blots out (annuls) evil
deeds.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari: Book 9, Hadith 7)

Who Is Required to Pray?

Prayer is obligatory upon every Muslim who is sane and has reached adulthood. Adulthood is marked by puberty, which can be identified by any of these signs: –

  1. Experiencing wet dreams
  2. The growth of pubic hair
  3. Menstruation (for girls)
  4. Reaching the age of 15 lunar years

Understanding the Salah Prayer Structure

Each of the five daily Salah prayers is made up of different segments: Fard, Sunnah, and Nafl. Understanding this structure is key to learning how to pray Salah properly.

  • Fard – These are the obligatory units. They must be performed for the prayer to be valid.
  • Sunnah – These are highly recommended units practiced by the Prophet. Missing them doesn’t invalidate your prayer, but you miss out on great reward.
  • Nafl – These are purely voluntary units you can pray to gain extra reward. They can be performed at any permissible time in sets of two Rakahs, either attached to the obligatory prayers or separately.

Each segment consists of Rakahs. A Rakah is a single unit of prayer that includes a sequence of standing, bowing, prostrating, and sitting. We will explore these movements in detail throughout this guide.

Names and Times of the Five Daily Prayers

Here is a breakdown of the five compulsory daily prayers, along with the number of Fard and recommended Sunnah units.

Fajr (Dawn Prayer)
Performed before sunrise: 2 Sunnah before + 2 Fard

Dhuhr (Noon Prayer)
After the sun passes its highest point: 4 Sunnah (prayed as 2+2) before + 4 Fard + 2 or 4 Sunnah after

Asr (Afternoon Prayer)
Midway between noon and sunset: 4 Sunnah (prayed as 2+2) before + 4 Fard

Maghrib (Sunset Prayer)
Immediately after sunset: 2 Sunnah before + 3 Fard + 2 Sunnah after

Isha (Night Prayer)
From nightfall until just before dawn (preferably before midnight): 2 Sunnah before + 4 Fard + 2 Sunnah after

Reciting Aloud or Quietly:
For Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha, the recitation of Al-Fatiha and a Surah in the first two Rakahs of the Fard prayer is recited aloud. The other prayers and units are recited quietly. If you are the imam, you should recite loudly enough for those behind you to hear. If you are praying alone, you can recite softly, under your breath, so as not to disturb others.

The Prophet (ﷺ) emphasized the virtue of the regular Sunnah prayers:

It was
narrated that ‘Aishah said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Whoever persists in performing twelve Rak’ah from the Sunnah, a house will be built for him in Paradise: four before the Zuhr, two Rak’ah after Zuhr, two Rak’ah after Maghrib, two Rak’ah after the ‘Isha’ and two Rak’ah before Fajr.’”

(Sunan Ibn Majah: Book 5, Hadith 338)

Pray on Time
Perform each prayer as soon as its time enters. Delaying a prayer without a valid reason is not permissible, and it must never be postponed past its allotted time. A core part of knowing how to pray Salah is learning to pray it on time.

Missed Prayers
Intentionally missing a prayer is a major sin. Any missed prayer must be made up as soon as possible, performed in the exact same manner as the original prayer.

Prayer Timetables
Use a reliable local Islamic prayer timetable to keep track of the correct prayer times all year round. Allah says:

When the prayers are over, remember Allah—whether you are standing, sitting, or lying down. But when you are secure, establish regular prayers. Indeed, performing prayers is a duty on the believers at the appointed times.

(Quran 4:103)

Purification and Cleanliness (Tahaarah)

Purity is a prerequisite for learning how to pray Salah correctly. Before you begin, you must have a sincere intention for the sake of Allah and ensure your body, clothes, and prayer area are free from any impurities like urine or other unclean substances. After using the toilet, it is recommended to wash the private areas with water whenever possible and safe.

A full ritual bath (ghusl) is obligatory in specific situations: after sexual relations, ejaculation (including wet dreams), and for women after their menstrual or postnatal bleeding has ended.

Allah loves those who constantly repent and purify themselves

(Quran 2:222)

The Intention (Niyyah)

Every action in Islam starts with a clear intention, made purely for the sake of Allah. This intention resides in the heart and is not uttered aloud. Before you learn the movements of how to pray Salah, you must ground yourself in this inner focus.

Before You Begin the Prayer: A Checklist

Before you start to pray, ensure you have fulfilled the following conditions where possible:

  1. Proper Clothing
    1. For men: Cover the body from the navel to the knees, and ensure both shoulders are covered. Clothing must be loose and non-transparent.
    2. For women: Cover the entire body except the hands and face. Clothing must be loose and non-transparent.
  2. Cleanliness – Your body, clothing, and prayer area must be free from impurities.
  3. Purity (Wudu) – You must be in a state of ablution.
  4. Prayer Time – The prescribed time for the prayer must have begun.
  5. Facing the Qiblah – Face the direction of the Ka’bah in Makkah.
  6. Sutrah (Barrier) – If you are praying alone in an open area, place an object like a backpack or a chair in front of you as a barrier. Leave just enough space to prostrate comfortably, but not so much that someone can walk between you and the sutrah.

Facing the Qiblah (Direction of the Ka’bah)

Facing the Qiblah is a fundamental condition for a valid prayer, whether it is Fard or Sunnah.

  • There are exceptions for genuine necessities, such as during battle (Salat al-Khawf), an inability to face it due to illness, or while traveling on a plane or ship where maintaining the direction before time expires is impossible.
  • A person performing voluntary or Witr prayers on a riding animal may face the direction of travel, though it is recommended to face the Qiblah for the opening takbeer if possible.
  • If you can see the Ka’bah directly, you must face it exactly. Everyone else faces its general direction.

What if I make a mistake in the Qiblah direction?

  • If you do your best to find the correct direction but later realize you prayed in the wrong one, your prayer is still valid and you do not need to repeat it.
  • If you learn the correct direction while you are still praying, simply turn towards it without interrupting your prayer.

Qiyam: Standing in Prayer

Standing is an obligatory pillar of the prayer, but Islam’s guidance on how to pray Salah accommodates all situations:

  • During a state of fear or active combat, you may pray while riding.
  • If you are sick and cannot stand, pray sitting. If you cannot sit, pray while lying on your side.
  • Voluntary (Nafl) prayers can be performed sitting, with the bowing (ruku) and prostration (sujud) indicated by head movements.

Using a Sutrah (Barrier) in Prayer

Praying towards a sutrah is an essential part of how to pray Salah, whether you are in a mosque or elsewhere.

    • Pray close to the sutrah, leaving only a small gap between you and it, as taught by the Prophet ﷺ.
    • The object should be about a handspan or more in height. A line drawn on the ground does not count as a valid sutrah.
    • Face the sutrah directly; shifting away from it is not correct.
  • Acceptable objects include a wall, pillar, stick, tree, a resting animal, or even a person (such as a spouse lying down).

Exceptions and Prohibitions

  • It is forbidden to pray directly facing a grave.
  • Passing in front of a person praying with a sutrah is strictly prohibited, even in the Grand Mosque (al-Masjid al-Haram).

Protecting Your Sutrah

  • Passing between a worshipper and their sutrah is a serious sin.
  • If you are praying, you should gently prevent anyone from passing in front of you, as this could break or diminish your prayer.

Maintaining Focus and Humility in Prayer

Once you are learning how to pray Salah, protecting its quality is crucial. The goal is to stand before Allah with complete humility and concentration (Khushu’).

  • Avoid praying in highly distracting environments with unnecessary decorations.
  • Do not begin your prayer when food is ready and you are hungry, or when you need to relieve yourself.
  • While standing, fix your gaze on the place of prostration. Do not look left, right, or up at the sky, as this takes away from your focus.
  • Recite the Quran slowly and deliberately, pausing after each verse to reflect on the words.

Mastering how to pray Salah is a lifelong journey of devotion and spiritual growth. As you continue to learn and perfect your prayer, remember that Allah values the quality and sincerity of your worship above all else. This guide has covered the essential foundations, and in the next part of our series, we will walk through the complete steps of Salah in detail, from the opening takbeer to the final tasleem. May Allah accept your efforts and make you among those who establish prayer with humility and consistency.
