Introduction
The Year of Hijra marks one of the most important moments in Islamic history. It was not just a migration; it was the foundation of a new era. Understanding the events of the Year of Hijra gives deeper insight into the strength, faith, and strategy of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions.
What Is the Year of Hijra?
The Year of Hijra, or Hijrah, refers to the year when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ migrated from Makkah to Madinah. This event took place in 622 CE and is so significant that it became the starting point of the Islamic calendar. It marked the shift from persecution to establishing a unified Muslim community.
Why Did the Hijrah Happen?
At the time, Muslims in Makkah faced severe oppression, torture, and social boycott. Despite this, they remained firm in their faith. However, the growing hostility made it impossible for them to live safely or worship freely.
In Madinah (then Yathrib), two major tribes, Aws and Khazraj, accepted Islam and pledged to protect the Prophet ﷺ. This agreement offered Muslims a safe place to practice their religion and form a community based on Islamic principles.
Key Events of the Hijrah
Here are the main events that occurred during the Year of Hijra:
- Secret Planning: The Quraysh plotted to assassinate the Prophet ﷺ. He left Makkah with Abu Bakr (RA) under Allah’s command.
- Cave of Thawr: They hid for three days in the cave while the enemies searched everywhere.
- Divine Protection: Whie the Prophetﷺ and Abu Bakr (RA) were in the cave of Thawr a spider wove a web obstructing the entrance. The bounty hunters chasing the Prophet assumed the Prophetﷺ could not be inside of the cave due to the spider web covering the enterance which could not have been done such litttle time.
- Migration to Madinah: The journey took around 8 to 12 days. Along the way, they met various tribes and spread the message of Islam.
- Warm Welcome: The people of Madinah (the Ansar) welcomed the Prophet ﷺ with open hearts and pledged full support.
- Masjid al-Nabawi Built: One of the first actions in Madinah was the construction of a mosque, the center of the new community.
- The Constitution of Madinah: A social and political agreement that ensured harmony among Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
What does the Qur’an mention of the Hijra
The Quran mentions the Spider:
It does not matter if you believers do not support him, for Allah did in fact support him when the disbelievers drove him out of Mecca and he was only one of two. While they both were in the cave, he reassured his companion,1 “Do not worry; Allah is certainly with us.” So Allah sent down His serenity upon the Prophet, supported him with forces you believers did not see, and made the word of the disbelievers lowest, while the Word of Allah is supreme. And Allah is Almighty, All-Wise.
Quran 9:40
The Qur’an mentions the Hijrah as a sign of faith and trust in Allah:
Those who believed, migrated, and struggled in the cause of Allah, and those who gave them shelter and help, they are the true believers. They will have forgiveness and an honourable provision.
Quran 8:74
