Introduction

We are going to answer the question: What is Kaaba the stone? The Kaaba Stone, also known as the Black Stone (Al-Hajar al-Aswad) is one of the most sacred objects in Islam. Located in the eastern corner of the Kaaba in Makkah, this revered stone has a powerful spiritual and historical significance for Muslims around the world.

What Is the Kaaba Stone?

The Kaaba Stone, or Black Stone, is a small, oval shaped object set in the corner of the Kaaba. The Kaaba itself is the sacred structure Muslims face during their daily prayers. The Black Stone is embedded in a silver frame, and it sits about 1.5 meters above the ground.

Muslims believe that the Black Stone dates back to the time of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Ismail (Ishmael). They were instructed by Allah to build the Kaaba, and the Black Stone marked its starting point.
The Religious Significance

The Black Stone is not worshipped, but it holds deep symbolic meaning. According to Islamic tradition, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ kissed the stone, and Muslims who perform Hajj or Umrah try to do the same if possible. If touching or kissing it isn’t possible, they raise their hand toward it as a sign of respect.

Ibn Ubaid bin Umair narrated from his father: “Ibn Umar was clinging on the two corners (in a manner that I had not seen any of the Companions of the Prophet doing) so I said: ‘O Abu Abdur-Rahman! You are clinging on the two corners in a manner that I have not seen any of the Companions of the Prophet clining.’ So he said: ‘I do it because I heard the Messenger of Allah saying: “Touching them atones for sins.” And I heard him saying: “Whoever performs Tawaf around this House seven times and he keeps track of it, then it is as if he freed a slave.” And I heard him saying: “One foot is not put down, nor another raised except that Allah removes a sin from him and records a good merit for him.”

This shows the stone’s spiritual value in Islamic tradition.

Origin and Appearance

So, what is the Kaaba stone made of? According to hadiths the stone was sent down from Paradise. Some Hadiths describe it as originally white, but it turned black due to the sins of people who touched it.

Ibn Abbas narrated that: The Messenger of Allah said: “The Black Stone descended from the Paradise, and it was more white than milk, then it was blackened by the sins of the children of Adam.”

Jami` at-Tirmidhi: Book 9, Hadith 70

The stone appears dark, polished, and smooth due to centuries of contact by pilgrims.

How the Stone Was Placed

When the Kaaba was rebuilt during the Prophet Muhammad’s youth, a dispute broke out over who would place the Black Stone. To settle the issue, the Prophet ﷺ proposed a peaceful solution. He placed the stone on a cloth and asked tribal leaders to hold each corner. Then he himself positioned the stone in its place. This wise act earned him the title of Al-Ameen (The Trustworthy).

Is the Kaaba Stone Still Intact?

Today, the stone is actually made up of several smaller pieces held together by a silver casing. Centuries of damage, theft attempts, and fire incidents have caused some loss. However, the core pieces remain and continue to hold immense symbolic value for Muslims.

Myths vs. Reality

While many legends surround the Black Stone, Islam clearly teaches it is not divine. Muslims honor it because the Prophet ﷺ did. It does not forgive sins or grant wishes, only Allah has that power.
Conclusion

So, what is Kaaba stone? It is the Black Stone, a sacred symbol deeply connected to the history of Islam and Prophet Ibrahim. Though it’s not an object of worship, it represents obedience, unity, and tradition. For every Muslim, seeing or touching it is a powerful moment of spiritual connection.
