Yes, interest (riba) is strictly haram in Islam. Allah condemns it in the Quran, and the Prophet (ﷺ) warned against it. Let’s examine the evidence.

Quranic Proof: Allah Declares War on Riba

Allah says:

Those who consume interest will stand [on Judgment Day] like those driven to madness by Satan’s touch. That is because they say, “Trade is no different than interest.” But Allah has permitted trading and forbidden interest. Whoever refrains—after having received warning from their Lord—may keep their previous gains, and their case is left to Allah. As for those who persist, it is they who will be the residents of the Fire. They will be there forever.

Quran 2:275

Another verse warns:

O believers! Fear Allah, and give up outstanding interest if you are [true] believers.

If you do not, then beware of a war with Allah and His Messenger! But if you repent, you may retain your principal—neither inflicting nor suffering harm.

Quran 2:278-279

These verses prove riba is a major sin with severe consequences.

Hadith Proof: Interest Among Worst Sins

Jabir said that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) cursed the accepter of interest and its payer, and one who records it, and the two witnesses, and he said: They are all equal.

Sahih Muslim: Book 22, Hadith 132

This shows no exceptions, all interest transactions are haram.

Why Is Riba Haram?

Interest (riba) is haram because it exploits the poor, widening economic inequality. Allah and His Messenger issued a stern divine warning against it, leaving no room for exceptions. Beyond material harm, riba corrupts the soul by replacing trust in Allah’s provision with greedy dependence on forbidden gain. The Quran and Hadith make this prohibition crystal clear – believers must completely avoid interest based transactions to protect both society and their spiritual wellbeing.

Final Verdict

Interest is undeniably haram in Islam. The Quran and Sunnah leave no room for doubt. Muslims must avoid it completely and seek halal alternatives.
