Muzdalifah is one of the key landmarks of the Hajj pilgrimage, yet many don’t fully understand its importance. Located between Arafat and Mina, this sacred site plays a vital role in the spiritual journey of millions of Muslims. In this post, we’ll explore why Muzdalifah matters, its history, purpose, and what pilgrims do when they visit.
1. Location and Distance from the Kaaba
Muzdalifah lies southeast of Mina, between Arafat and Mina. It is around 10 to 12 kilometers from the Kaaba in Makkah.
After standing at Arafat, pilgrims travel to Muzdalifah after sunset. The journey from Arafat to Muzdalifah is a key step in the Hajj process.
2. Historical and Spiritual Significance
Muzdalifah holds deep historical and spiritual value in Islam. It is where Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prayed and rested during his Farewell Pilgrimage. The site is also linked to the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), his wife Hajar, and their son Isma’il. Muslims believe that they all passed through this area during their trials of faith.
In the Quran, Allah mentions “al-Mash’ar al-Haram,” which is in Muzdalifah, meaning the Sacred Monument. This title highlights its importance as a place for collective remembrance and worship.
There is no blame on you for seeking the bounty of your Lord [during this journey].1 When you return from ’Arafât, praise Allah near the sacred place and praise Him for having guided you, for surely before this [guidance] you were astray.
Quran 2:198
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instructed the pilgrims to stay in Muzdalifah after Arafat. He combined the Maghrib and Isha prayers there and rested until Fajr.
Usama b. Zaid (Allah be pleased with him) reported: I was sitting behind Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) on the riding animal from ‘Arafat. As Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) reached the left side of the mountain which was situated near Muzdalifa, he made the camel kneel down and made water and then came back. I poured water and he, performed light ablution. I then said: Messenger of Allah, it is time for prayer. Thereupon Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: The prayer awaits you (at the next station, Muzdalifa). Allah’s Messenger (may peaced be upon him) rode on until he came to Muzdalifa and observed prayer. Then al-Fadl (Allah be pleased with him) sat behind Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and reached (Muzdalifa) in the morning. Kuraib said: ‘Abdullah b. ‘Abbas (Allah be pleased with them) narrated from al-Fadl (Allah be pleased with him) that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) continued pronouncing Talbiya until he reached al-Jamara (al-‘Aqaba).
Sahih Muslim: Book 15, Hadith 293
Muzdalifah is also where pilgrims gather pebbles for the stoning ritual at Mina. This ritual commemorates Ibrahim’s rejection of Satan, who tried to divert him from obeying Allah. Therefore, Muzdalifah connects the physical journey of Hajj with deep spiritual meaning.
3. Muzdalifah’s Role in Hajj Today
Today, millions of pilgrims visit Muzdalifah each year as part of their Hajj. Upon arrival, they combine the Maghrib and Isha prayers, following the Sunnah. They then collect small pebbles from the ground for the stoning at the Jamarat. Pilgrims sleep under the open sky, experiencing humility and equality. The simple act of sleeping on the ground symbolizes detachment from worldly comfort.
4. What Can You Do in Muzdalifah?
- Pray: Combine and perform Maghrib and Isha when you arrive during Hajj
- Collect pebbles: Pick 49 or 70 small stones for the Jamarat ritual
- Reflect: Use the quiet time to make du‘a and remember Allah
- Rest: Sleep outdoors to reconnect with the humility of past pilgrims
- Follow the Sunnah: Stay until Fajr prayer before moving to Mina
You can visit outside of Hajj as well, but it’s important to note that the rituals associated with Muzdalifah, such as staying overnight or collecting pebbles, are only performed during Hajj.
