The question is , what is the concept of tawheed in Islam? Tawheed refers to the absolute oneness of Allah. It is the most fundamental belief in Islam. In fact, tawheed defines the entire framework of Islamic faith. The Arabic word tawheed comes from wahhada, which means “to unify” or “to declare one.” Therefore, tawheed means affirming the oneness of Allah in all aspects of worship and belief.
Three Categories of Tawheed
To understand what is the concept of tawheed, scholars have divided it into three essential categories:
Tawheed ar-Ruboobiyyah (Oneness of Lordship)
This means believing that Allah alone created and controls everything. Nothing happens except by His will.
Tawheed al-Uloohiyyah (Oneness of Worship)
This affirms that only Allah deserves worship. All acts of devotion, prayer, dua, and sacrifice must be directed to Him alone.
Tawheed al-Asma wa Sifaat (Oneness of Names and Attributes)
This means believing in Allah’s names and attributes without distortion, denial, or comparing them to creation.
Why Tawheed Matters
Tawheed is not a concept limited to theory. It transforms belief into action. When a Muslim understands tawheed, they submit only to Allah. They also reject all forms of shirk (associating partners with Him).
Moreover, the Quran begins and ends with tawheed. The message of every prophet, from Adam to Muhammad ﷺ focused on this truth. As Allah says:
We surely sent a messenger to every community, saying, “Worship Allah and shun false gods.” But some of them were guided by Allah, while others were destined to stray. So travel throughout the land and see the fate of the deniers!
Quran 16:36
Final Thoughts
So, what is the concept of tawheed? It is the essence of Islam, believing, worshipping, and submitting to Allah alone. Without tawheed, faith is incomplete. Every Muslim must understand it to uphold the truth of Islam.
