narrated that ‘Umair bin Anas bin Malik said: “My paternal uncles among the Ansar who were among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) told me: ‘The new crescent of Shawwal was covered with clouds, so we fasted the next day. Then some riders came at the end of the day and testified to the Prophet (ﷺ) that they had seen the new crescent the night before. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded them to break their fast and to go out to offer the ‘Eid prayer the following morning.’”

The above hadith is from the Sunan Ibn Majah collection of hadiths. Compiled by the scholar Ibn Majah, who passed away in 273 AH (886 CE), the Sunan Ibn Majah is recognized as one of the six canonical hadith collections, or Kutub al-Sittah, within Sunni Islam. This substantial work contains approximately 4,000 narrations that address a wide array of subjects crucial to Islamic life. These topics encompass matters of faith, detailed ritual practices, personal ethics, and broader social issues. While it is a respected and important resource, its standing is often considered slightly below that of the other five major collections. This perception exists because scholars have identified a number of weaker narrations within its contents.
