Sunan Ibn Majah: Book 20, Hadith 65
It was narrated from Ishaq bin Abu Talhah: “I heard Abu Mundhir, the freed slave of Abu Dharr, say that Abu Umayyah narrated to him, that a thief was brought to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and he admitted his crime, although the stolen goods were not found with him. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘I do not think you stole them.’ He said: ‘Yes I did.’ Then he said (again): ‘I do not think that you stole them.’ and he said: ‘Yes I did.’ Then he ordered that his hand be cut off. The Prophet (ﷺ) ‘ Say: I seek Allah’s forgiveness and I repent to Him.’ So he (the thief) said: ‘I seek Allah’s forgiveness and I repent to him.’ He (the Prophet (ﷺ) said twice: ‘O Allah! Accept his repentance.”
حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ، سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْمُنْذِرِ، – مَوْلَى أَبِي ذَرٍّ – يَذْكُرُ أَنَّ أَبَا أُمَيَّةَ، حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أُتِيَ بِلِصٍّ فَاعْتَرَفَ اعْتِرَافًا وَلَمْ يُوجَدْ مَعَهُ الْمَتَاعُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ” مَا إِخَالُكَ سَرَقْتَ ” . قَالَ بَلَى . ثُمَّ قَالَ ” مَا إِخَالُكَ سَرَقْتَ ” . قَالَ بَلَى . فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَقُطِعَ . فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ” قُلْ أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ ” . قَالَ أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ . قَالَ ” اللَّهُمَّ تُبْ عَلَيْهِ ” . مَرَّتَيْنِ .

The above hadith is from the Sunan Ibn Majah collection of hadiths. The Sunan Ibn Majah holds a significant place as one of the six major books of hadith in Sunni Islamic tradition. Its compiler, Ibn Majah, completed this work in the 9th century, with his death occurring in 886 CE. The collection is extensive, featuring around 4,000 hadiths that provide guidance on diverse themes. These include core tenets of faith, the correct performance of religious rituals, ethical conduct, and rulings on social interactions. Although it is a respected compilation, it is generally accorded a lower rank in terms of overall authenticity when compared to the other five collections. This is primarily due to the inclusion of some narrations deemed less reliable by hadith critics. Nevertheless, it remains a fundamental text for academic and religious study.
