Khadijah bint Khuwaylid was a woman of extraordinary strength, wisdom, and unshakable faith. She lived in Mecca and was born into a noble family from the respected Quraysh tribe. Her society knew her as al-Tahira, meaning “the Pure One.” This title reflected her impeccable character and reputation.
A Successful Business Woman
Khadijah was also a highly successful merchant. She skillfully managed a vast trade empire, first inheriting and then expanding her family’s business. She earned great respect for her integrity and sharp business mind. Known for her wealth, she hired others to lead trade caravans on her behalf.
Her previous marriages
Before marrying the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Khadijah (RA) had been married twice. Her first marriage was to Abu Hala, with whom she had two sons, Hind and Hala, the latter being the source of her kunya (nickname) Umm Hind. After his passing, she married `Atiq ibn ‘A’idh, and they had a daughter named Hindah. Widowed twice, she inherited and expertly managed a vast trade empire, an exceptional achievement that left her a wealthy and powerful business woman in charge of her own destiny in 7th-century Meccan society.
Khadija’s marriage with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Despite many suitors from Mecca’s most influential men, the widowed Khadijah chose her husband wisely. She famously proposed marriage to Muhammad ﷺ after being deeply impressed by his honesty and character when he managed her trade caravan to Syria. Following her growing admiration for his character, Khadijah did not propose directly. Instead, she wisely orchestrated the proposal through a trusted intermediary, asking her friend Nufaysa to convey her offer of marriage to Muhammad ﷺ. After he accepted, the formal arrangements were made, leading to their blessed union.
The Revelation
Their marriage of 25 years was filled with profound love, trust, and mutual respect. Khadijah supported him emotionally and financially and most notably when he received the Revelation. When Muhammad ﷺ received his first revelation, he was shaken. He came to Khadijah, seeking comfort and clarity, saying “Zammilūni, zammilūni!” (cover me! cover me!). the prophet terrified of what had experienced said, “”I fear that something may happen to me.””. She reassured him and said “Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You uphold ties of kinship, you bear the burden of the weak, you help the poor, you are generous to your guest, and you assist those afflicted by true calamity.”. She then took him to her cousin, a learned man.
Khadijah helped the Prophet make sense of what he had experienced
After the first revelation, a worried Khadijah took the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to see her cousin, Waraqah ibn Nawfal. Waraqah was a learned, elderly Christian who had studied the previous scriptures (the Torah and the Gospel) in their original languages and was deeply knowledgeable about religion. Upon hearing the Prophet’s account of what happened in the cave of Hira, Waraqah’s reaction was immediate and profound. He recognized the event for what it was.
Waraqah said, “This is the same Namus (the angel) who was sent down to Moses. I wish I were young and could live until the time when your people will drive you out.”. the Prophet replied, “Will they drive me out?”. Waqarah said, “Yes. No man has ever come with what you have brought without being opposed and attacked. If I should live to see that day, I would support you with all my strength”. This prophecy from Waraqah, a respected figure from her own family, provided Khadijah with the scholarly confirmation she sought and further solidified her unwavering faith and support for the Prophet ﷺ. Tragically, Waraqah died shortly after this meeting.
Through this, she became the first person to believe in Islam.
Hadiths emphasizing how much she meant to the Prophetﷺ
Her support became the foundation of the early Islamic movement. She gave her wealth for the cause of truth. She endured boycott and suffering without complaint. Her resilience strengthened the Prophet’s mission.
The Prophet never forgot her. Years later, he said: “She believed in me when no one else did.”.
‘A’isha reported that Allah’s Messenger (may peace he upon him) gave glad tidings to Khadija bint Khuwailid of a palace in Paradise.
Sahih Muslim: Book 44, Hadith 106
Narrated `Ali: I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, “Mary, the daughter of `Imran, was the best among the women (of the world of her time) and Khadija is the best amongst the women. (of this nation).
Sahih al-Bukhari: Book 60, Hadith 103
Conclision: Khadijah’s Enduring Legacy
They say behind every great man stands a great woman. But behind the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the best of creation, stood not just a great woman, but his unwavering anchor: Khadijah bint Khuwaylid. She was the unwavering believer when disbelief was the norm, the trusted confidant when he was called a liar, and the fortress of support when he was met with rejection. Her home was the first cradle of Islam, her wealth its first treasury, and her heart its first home.
The story of Khadijah bint khuwaylid is not merely a historical account; it is a profound legacy and a powerful blueprint. It is a narrative that every Muslim, and notably every Muslim woman, should not just read, but study, cherish, and emulate. She redefined strength, demonstrating that true power lies in unwavering faith, intelligent action, and resilient compassion. She was a successful business woman, a nurturing mother, a loyal wife, and the first Muslim, all seamlessly woven into one identity, dedicated to the service of God.
In a world that often asks women to choose between different roles, Khadijah’s life poses a challenging question: What becomes possible when a woman’s intellect, her wealth, and her unshakeable faith are placed at the forefront of a divine mission? Her story is the answer. It is an eternal inspiration, a call to recognize that the pursuit of excellence in this world and the pursuit of pleasure in the Hereafter are not opposing paths, but one and the same, paved with faith, sacrifice, and love.
