”الطواغي”: جمع طاغية، وهي الأصنام، ومنه الحديث: ”هذه طاغية دوس”: أي: صنمهم ومعبودهم، وروي في غير مسلم: ”بالطواغيت” جمع طاغوت، وهو الشيطان والصنم.
