Muwatta Malik: Book 53, Hadith 3
Yahya said, “Malik was asked whether a person who greeted a jew or christian, should apologise for it. He said, ‘No’.”
“ إِنَّ الْيَهُودَ إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدُهُمْ فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ . فَقُلْ عَلَيْكَ ” .

The above hadith is from the Muwatta Malik collection of hadiths. Compiled by Imam Malik ibn Anas in the 8th century, the Muwatta Malik is one of the earliest surviving books of hadith.
