Musnad Ahmad ibn Hanbal: Book 2, Hadith 115

It was narrated from Ibn as-Simt that he came to some land called Doomeen, eighteen miles from Homs, and prayed two rak’ahs. I said to him. Are you praying two rak’ahs? He said: One of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the mosque on a Friday, when ‘Umar bin al Khattab رضي الله عنه ­ was addressing the people. ‘Umar said: What time is this? He said: ‘O Ameer al-Mu’mineen, I have just come from the marketplace. I heard the call and I did not do anything more than wudoo’, ‘Umar رضي الله عنه said: Wudoo’ too! You know that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to enjoin ghusl!

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ يَزِيدَ بْنَ خُمَيْرٍ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ السِّمْطِ، أَنَّهُ أَتَى أَرْضًا يُقَالُ لَهَا دَوْمِينُ مِنْ حِمْصَ عَلَى رَأْسِ ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ مِيلًا فَصَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَتُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَقَالَ رَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ بِذِي الْحُلَيْفَةِ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا أَفْعَلُ كَمَا رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْ قَالَ فَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ‏.‏
