Jami` at-Tirmidhi: Book 49, Hadith 321

Narrated Sa’eed bin Al-Musayyab: that Abu Hurairah used to say: “If I saw hyenas roaming in Al-Madinah, I would not advance upon them. Indeed the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Whatever is between its two lava tracts is sacred.'”

حَدَّثَنَا الأَنْصَارِيُّ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْنٌ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكٌ، وَحَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ لَوْ رَأَيْتُ الظِّبَاءَ تَرْتَعُ بِالْمَدِينَةِ مَا ذَعَرْتُهَا إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏
“‏ مَا بَيْنَ لاَبَتَيْهَا حَرَامٌ ‏”‏ ‏. وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ سَعْدٍ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ وَأَنَسٍ وَأَبِي أَيُّوبَ وَزَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ وَرَافِعِ بْنِ خَدِيجٍ وَسَهْلِ بْنِ حُنَيْفٍ وَجَابِرٍ ‏.‏ حَدِيثُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.‏

The above hadith is from the Jami` at-Tirmidhi collection of hadiths. Compiled in the 9th century by the esteemed Islamic scholar Imam Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa al-Tirmidhi, the Jami` at-Tirmidhi is a foundational collection of hadith. It holds a position of immense value within Sunni Islam as one of the six canonical books known as the Kutub al-Sittah.
