Jami` at-Tirmidhi: Book 48, Hadith 22

Abu Hurairah (ra) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach his Companions, saying: “When one of you reached the morning, then let him say: ‘O Allah, by You we enter the morning, and by You we enter the evening, and be You we live, and by You we died, and to You is the Return (Allāhumma bika aṣbaḥnā wa bika amsainā wa bika naḥyā wa bika namūtu wa ilaikal-maṣīr). And when he reaches the evening let him say: ‘O Allah, by You we enter the evening, and by You we enter the morning, and by You we live, and by You we die, and to You is the Resurrection (Allāhumma bika amsainā wa bika aṣbaḥnā wa bika naḥyā wa bika namūtu wa ilaikan-nushūr).’”

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُهَيْلُ بْنُ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يُعَلِّمُ أَصْحَابَهُ يَقُولُ ‏
“‏ إِذَا أَصْبَحَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا وَبِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا وَبِكَ نَحْيَا وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ ‏.‏ وَإِذَا أَمْسَى فَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا وَبِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا وَبِكَ نَحْيَا وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ وَإِلَيْكَ النُّشُورُ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ ‏.‏

The above hadith is from the Jami` at-Tirmidhi collection of hadiths. Imam Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa al-Tirmidhi is the author behind the Jami at-Tirmidhi, a hadith compilation completed in the 9th century. It is universally acknowledged as one of the six most authentic and important books of hadith in Sunni Islam, a group collectively referred to as the Kutub al-Sittah. This group includes the seminal works of al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, al-Nasa’i, and ibn Majah. Al-Tirmidhi’s own Jami is a vast repository of knowledge, containing over 4,000 narrations organized into 46 books.
