Jami` at-Tirmidhi: Book 47, Hadith 393

Jabir narrated that : the Messenger of Allah said: “I have been ordered to fight the people until they say: ‘La ilaha illallah’. So when they say that, their blood and their wealth are safe from me, except for a right, and their reckoning is for Allah.” Then he recited: So remind them – you are only one who reminds. You are not a dictator over them.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏”‏ أُمِرْتُ أَنْ أُقَاتِلَ النَّاسَ حَتَّى يَقُولُوا لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ فَإِذَا قَالُوهَا عَصَمُوا مِنِّي دِمَاءَهُمْ وَأَمْوَالَهُمْ إِلاَّ بِحَقِّهَا وَحِسَابُهُمْ عَلَى اللَّهِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَرَأَ ‏:‏ ‏(‏ إنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُذَكِّرٌ * لَسْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِمُسَيْطِرٍ ‏)‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.‏

The above hadith is from the Jami` at-Tirmidhi collection of hadiths. Imam Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa al-Tirmidhi is the author behind the Jami at-Tirmidhi, a hadith compilation completed in the 9th century. It is universally acknowledged as one of the six most authentic and important books of hadith in Sunni Islam, a group collectively referred to as the Kutub al-Sittah. This group includes the seminal works of al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, al-Nasa’i, and ibn Majah.
