Jami` at-Tirmidhi: Book 43, Hadith 123

Narrated Al-Miqdam bin Shuraih: from his father, that ‘Aishah was asked: “Did the Prophet (ﷺ) used to say any poetry?” She said: “He would say parables with the poetry of Ibn Rawahah, saying: ‘News shall come to you from where you did not expect it.'”

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنِ الْمِقْدَامِ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَ قِيلَ لَهَا هَلْ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَتَمَثَّلُ بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الشِّعْرِ قَالَتْ كَانَ يَتَمَثَّلُ بِشِعْرِ ابْنِ رَوَاحَةَ وَيَتَمَثَّلُ وَيَقُولُ ‏
“‏ وَيَأْتِيكَ بِالأَخْبَارِ مَنْ لَمْ تُزَوِّدِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.‏

The above hadith is from the Jami` at-Tirmidhi collection of hadiths. The Jami` at-Tirmidhi is one of the six major hadith collections, or Kutub al-Sittah, revered in Sunni Islamic tradition. Its compiler, Imam al-Tirmidhi, undertook this significant work during the 9th century. This places it alongside other foundational texts like Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawood, Sunan an-Nasa’i, and Sunan ibn Majah.
