Jami` at-Tirmidhi: Book 18, Hadith 18

Narrated Jabir: “On the Day of Khaibar, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited eating domesticated donkeys, the meat of mules, every predator that possesses canine teeth, and every bird that possesses talons.”

حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النَّضْرِ، هَاشِمُ بْنُ الْقَاسِمِ حَدَّثَنَا عِكْرِمَةُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ حَرَّمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم – يَعْنِي يَوْمَ خَيْبَرَ – الْحُمُرَ الإِنْسِيَّةَ وَلُحُومَ الْبِغَالِ وَكُلَّ ذِي نَابٍ مِنَ السِّبَاعِ وَذِي مِخْلَبٍ مِنَ الطَّيْرِ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَعِرْبَاضِ بْنِ سَارِيَةَ وَابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ جَابِرٍ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ ‏.‏

The above hadith is from the Jami` at-Tirmidhi collection of hadiths. Jami` at-Tirmidhi, compiled by Imam Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa al-Tirmidhi, is a 9th-century hadith collection of paramount importance. It is definitively classified as one of the six canonical works, the Kutub al-Sittah, which are indispensable to Islamic studies. This group includes the renowned collections of al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, al-Nasa’i, and ibn Majah.
