Jami` at-Tirmidhi: Book 14, Hadith 1
“ الْحَلاَلُ بَيِّنٌ وَالْحَرَامُ بَيِّنٌ وَبَيْنَ ذَلِكَ أُمُورٌ مُشْتَبِهَاتٌ لاَ يَدْرِي كَثِيرٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ أَمِنَ الْحَلاَلِ هِيَ أَمْ مِنَ الْحَرَامِ فَمَنْ تَرَكَهَا اسْتِبْرَاءً لِدِينِهِ وَعِرْضِهِ فَقَدْ سَلِمَ وَمَنْ وَاقَعَ شَيْئًا مِنْهَا يُوشِكُ أَنْ يُوَاقِعَ الْحَرَامَ كَمَا أَنَّهُ مَنْ يَرْعَى حَوْلَ الْحِمَى يُوشِكُ أَنْ يُوَاقِعَهُ أَلاَ وَإِنَّ لِكُلِّ مَلِكٍ حِمًى أَلاَ وَإِنَّ حِمَى اللَّهِ مَحَارِمُهُ ” .

The above hadith is from the Jami` at-Tirmidhi collection of hadiths. Compiled in the 9th century by the esteemed Islamic scholar Imam Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa al-Tirmidhi, the Jami` at-Tirmidhi is a foundational collection of hadith. It holds a position of immense value within Sunni Islam as one of the six canonical books known as the Kutub al-Sittah.
