Before beginning your wudu (ablution), there’s a special dua before Wudu that many scholars recommend to spiritually prepare for purification. While no specific pre-wudu supplication is recorded from the Prophet ﷺ, the Islamic tradition encourages starting all important actions with Allah’s name. Here’s what to say as you prepare for ablution.

In the Name of Allah.

Bismillāhi

بِسْمِ الله

Hisnul Muslim 12

In Islam, supplication (known as du’a) is a personal and direct form of communication between a believer and Allah (God). It is an act of worship that reflects a Muslim’s humility, dependence, and trust in their Creator. Unlike the structured five daily prayers, supplications can be made at any time and in any language, though many are rooted in Arabic and drawn from the Qur’an and Hadith.

Muslims turn to du’a to seek guidance, forgiveness, strength during hardship, or simply to express gratitude. Even before acts of worship, such as performing ablution, Muslims may recite the dua before Wudu to prepare their hearts and intentions. Supplication reflects the essence of a believer’s relationship with God—intimate, sincere, and rooted in faith. It is a constant reminder of Allah’s nearness and mercy, affirming that no request is too small or too great for His attention.
